Conceptual landscape design method:

In an effort to streamline how we do things, the concept landscape designers at The Landscape House, and I have devised a new, easier to follow method of working with our clients. There is an old saying, "when you find the perfect solution to a problem, it is usually the simplest." While that may not be an entirely true statement, I have found in my experience that if the solution seems too difficult to get to, it usually is.

This method is the result of years of trying to simplify and streamline the way we work. I have worked with clients who know their site issues but they don't have the skill to understand the concepts and apply them in a way that make sense to the design process. This is the first step in the process of simplifying the design process.

This first step is to understand how a landscape project flows and how it relates to the larger picture. At the very least, clients should understand where the design is going, and how all of the pieces fit together. Once this has been established, it is much easier to streamline the design process and make it as simple as possible for the client.

To do this, we need to understand the basic premise and what goes into designing a landscape.

The first step to any landscape project is to get to know the space. While designing landscapes and hardscaping has nothing to do with the science, if we are not very familiar with the space, we can end up designing something that does not work. If we can get to know the context of the site (the way that the space is used, planted, what size the pool is, etc.) then we can design a design that reflects the context and is easy to follow. This is why it is important to be able to walk a site and take photographs.

Once the basics have been established, the next step is to assess the existing site and identify what is working and what is not. Does the land need a different kind of landscape? This is where our knowledge of the site begins to help us.

Our design process begins with a meeting with the clients to discuss the vision and scope of the project. When meeting with clients, we make it a point to establish rapport and trust. Since the client’s property is as important to us as our client’s lifestyle, we will be there to answer any questions that they have and to provide them with the services they need in a timely manner.

Our Design Process

We use design as an opportunity to establish a relationship with our clients. A good design helps the clients gain a better understanding of what is happening in their landscape. We are able to explain to the clients what the landscape is capable of and give them a better understanding of their options.

The design process begins with a project kickoff meeting where the clients define the scope of the project. At this point, we collect information about the clients. We look at their previous experiences, if they have a particular garden style or a desired plant combination that they are trying to achieve.

We work closely with the client and their landscape architect to define the purpose of the project. From there, we take a look at the client’s plans and get a sense of their landscape vision.

By providing us with the details of their property, including photographs, we are able to provide them with a more robust idea of what the site will look like and how it will perform.

After the plans are approved, we will take the information to a concept design meeting. At this point, we work closely with the client to refine the concept into something that is functional, affordable and something the client is comfortable with.

Finally, the landscape architect and the client will meet to discuss how the design will be developed. The client will select from the various design plans that were created and will specify their budget.

Once the plan is approved, we can get started. We’ll begin by taking site measurements and creating a construction plan. This will help ensure that everything fits within the property lines. From there, we can do the installation of the plan.

If any special landscaping or drainage is needed, we can go ahead and do that as well. Finally, we will take a look at the finished plan and ensure that it is exactly what the client was looking for.
